Florida Boomer Lifestyle Conference to Focus on Reinvention

Reinventing life after 50 is the theme of the second annual Florida Boomer Lifestyle Conference. The conference, planned for April 15 at Clearwater’s Ruth Eckerd Hall, will explore how baby boomers are reinventing their lives personally, professionally, physically and spiritually, and the implications for companies marketing to them, a release said. Presentations and panel discussions will include companies specializing in anti-aging medicine, healthy and sustainable living, lifelong learning and care giving. Boomers, the population of 78 million born between 1946 and 1964, are expected to comprise more than 30 percent of Florida’s population by 2015, the release said. The conference is designed to give marketers insight into boomer behavior to address the needs of the market, said Michelle Bauer, chief strategist of Common Language, the St. Petersburg communications firm producing the event along with Tampa marketing, branding and PR firm ChappellRoberts. Registration will begin Nov. 30. Tickets are $195 through Jan. 30, $245 after Feb. 1, and $295 after March 31.

USF drug at center of $1 billion AstraZeneca, Targacept deal

A drug to treat depression that was created and patented by a team of University of South Florida researchers is poised to bring millions of dollars of royalties to the university. AstraZeneca plc and Targacept Inc. announced a collaboration and license agreement for the global development and commercialization of the drug, TC-5214, as it enters its final stages of testing.

The drug was licensed to Targacept by the University of South Florida Research Foundation, which would be paid a portion of the royalties as the drug moves to market, USF said in a release. Details on the amount of USF’s royalties are confidential under its agreement with Targacept, but Valerie McDevitt, USF’s assistant vice president for research, said in the release that TC-5214 would generate “substantial revenue in the range of millions of dollars” and would be USF’s most lucrative patent to date. GRAMMY nomination for USF Jazz CD arranger

TAMPA, Fla. (Dec. 4, 2009) – A GRAMMY nomination has just been added to the critical acclaim around the University of South Florida Center for Jazz Composition’s first CD project, The Comet’s Tail: Playing The Compositions of Michael Brecker featuring Chuck Owen & The Jazz Surge and guest artists. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences recognized Vince Mendoza in the arranger category for his charts on the CD for the piece “Slings and Arrows.”  A prominent Los Angeles-based composer, Mendoza was commissioned by Owen, the center’s director to contribute to a work celebrating the work of the late saxophone star.  Mendoza, along with Gil Goldstein  was a frequent behind-the-scenes Brecker arrangers.  Grammy winners will be announced on January 31st in Los Angeles.

“The Comet’s Tail” was released Fall 2009 to great reviews, “Sensational.  One of the year’s great jazz discs,” Buffalo News; “A truly outstanding recording.  Explosively played. . . .   Deserving of universal attention,” Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide; “. . . a memorable gem,” Jazziz magazine.

USF professor Jack Wilkins is featured on “Slings and Arrows,” the GRAMMY nominated song.  Michael Nastos of All Music Guide describes Wilkins playing as skillful and clever, comparing him to “Michael’s post-Coltrane voicing’s.”

SRI part of oceanographic cluster formed in St. Petersburg

Oceanographic institutions in St. Petersburg are collaborating to enhance their visibility.They have formed the St. Petersburg Ocean Team, www.spoceanteam.org, Mayor Rick Baker said Friday. The industry cluster includes University of South Florida St. Petersburg, USF’s College of Marine Science and its Center for Ocean Technology, USF’s Research Foundation, SRI St. Petersburg, Florida Institute of Oceanography, International Ocean Institute – USA, Tampa Bay Estuary Program, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S. Geological Survey Center for Coastal and Wetland Studies, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, the city of St. Petersburg, The Pier Aquarium and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg.

These team members, along with related agencies and businesses, will work together to raise awareness in the community and nationwide about the member organizations and the research that they do, a release from the city said.

The St. Petersburg Ocean Team will also allow for team members to pool their collective staff expertise, infrastructure, and research capabilities so that member organizations can better address numerous issues facing the Florida and the nation including red tides, hurricanes, climate change, and offshore oil and gas exploration.

Ocean Team agencies have found a home in St. Petersburg’s Bayboro Harbor, the release said. They draw productive advantages from their proximity and connections as well as the similarities between their work force and vendor needs.

The Ocean Team and related cluster agencies and businesses employ more than 800 people and have an annual payroll in excess of $24 million, the release said.
