Tampa Bay Area Presents The First Annual Tampa Twilight Criterium And Festival
Monday, March 16th, 2009The Tampa Downtown Partnership announces the first annual Twilight Criterium and Festival to be held Saturday, March 21, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., in downtown Tampa. The event is free and open to the public and part of the Tampa BayCycle campaign.
The Criterium and festival is a family-friendly event that will feature both amateur and professional circuit bicycling races (criterium), and an outdoor wellness festival. Activities such as bike safety checks, helmet giveaways, a bicycle rodeo, street skills instruction, bike gear vendors, bike movies and more will take place throughout the day. A VIP-led bicycling parade is open to the public, so be sure to come decorate your bike and join the ride.
A Criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 5 km), often run on closed-off city centre streets. Race length can be determined by a total time or a number of laps, in which case the number of remaining laps is calculated as the race progresses. Generally the event’s duration (commonly one hour) is shorter than that of a traditional road race, however, the average speed and intensity are appreciably higher. The winner is the first rider to cross the finish line without having been lapped.
Success in a Criterium requires a mix of good technical skills — in particular, the ability to corner smoothly, while “holding your line” on the road, as well as rapidly and sharply — and riding safely with a large group on a short circuit and exceptional “sprint” ability to attack other riders and repeatedly accelerate hard from corners. For more information about the first annual Twilight Criterium and Festival, and to register for events, please visit www.tampacrit.com.

Save the date for the inaugural Florida Boomer Lifestyle Conference, May 12
Monday, March 16th, 2009America’s 78 million baby boomers – people born between 1946 and 1964 – constitute our largest, most affluent, and best educated consumer segment. They are in their peak earning years and spend $2.3 trillion annually on consumer goods and services, a whopping $400 billion more than any demographic group, according to the 2006 Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Study. Surprisingly, they are underserved by many marketers, who covet the 18-49 year olds, and the mature marketers, whose approaches are better suited for boomers’ parents.
The inaugural Florida Boomer Lifestyle Conference, scheduled for May 12 at the Tampa Convention Center, is designed to help businesses understand the global and national trends shaping the boomer economy and the opportunities to be found within it. Trends to be explored include care giving, wellness, personal and career reinvention, social entrepreneurship, and financing longevity. Companies that are achieving success in marketing to boomers, such as Tampa’s Ott Lite , will share best practices. The conference will also explore how Florida’s business communities can gain competitive advantage by developing a boomer strategy.
Read more from St. Pete Times’ business columnist Bob Trigaux’s article on the conference here.

Yum Brands Opens First Green KFC-Taco Bell Restaurant
Monday, March 16th, 2009Northampton, Mass. — Restaurant giant Yum Brands Inc. has opened an eco-friendly KFC-Taco Bell in Northampton, Mass., marking the 11-year-old company’s first attempt to seek green building certification for one of its eateries.
The restaurant is designed according to environmental goals that include cutting energy and water consumption by 30 percent and reducing CO2 emissions. Operations at the new site are also expected to reduce waste and the amount of rubbish sent to landfills; the restaurant composts and recycles other waste, grease and used cooking oil. The company is seeking certification for the restaurant based on the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environment Design standards.
