Re: Today’s SP Times MLK Day Jan 21, 2008

A recession touches many hands… Helen Huntley 727-893-8230

The Mayor Has No Clothes On!

Re: MLK Day Day - We Have a Dream - Save the Museum! and the parking garage and the $10 million.

    Wrong Way to Go Iorio!

We Have a Dream - Save the Museum, but no one will tell her - not the media. Not even the executive director of Hillsborough County Art Council who said that the demolition of the museum, the garage and the waste of millions [$100 million] was the WRONG WAY TO GO for a City to be - a City of the Arts, but he has remained silent, why?
The article goes on to say that jobs are disappearing, sales are shrinking, customers are staying away, the phones are not ringing, we know the unemployment rate is rising, the police chief had to reduced his force by 47 employees and the mayor by 100 positions.
And the mayor still wants to spend $10 million to destroy a perfectly good downtown water front museum and a money making parking garage. We say to the mayor STOP - think again about what you doing, if this a good time? could the money be better used to stimulate the local economy? If the museum is recycled to a museum of modern art and design or an African American Museum of the Arts, or a Multicultural Arts Center - then the same space will not have to be duplicated in the new fine arts museum at over $600 per square foot.
The retail, classrooms, library, administration, storage would remain in the saved building, freeing up that space in the new museum which will have only 25% of gallery space. Saving the museum would allow up to 85% gallery space at less cost.
The garage will earn up to one million dollars a year when the Riverwalk opens, the new fine art museum opens, with the recycled museum and the open area under the garage a perfect place for a money making - job creating on the water Riverwalk cafe, restaurant and after hours cabaret.
Most people we talk to do not know what she intends to do and she, nor have staff have been open about their plan.
We ask the mayor to stop, she leaves office in three years - we do not want her legacy stained by this one project. People are already agreeing that it is a vanity project and her park will be one that will attract only more homeless downtown. The citizens of Tampa are not in front of city hall with pitchforks and torches yelling for her to spend the $10 million to demolish the museum and the parking garage.
But they would if they knew.

  • I know this is highly unorthodox, but we have a very unique event and we need everyone’s help in getting the word out. Please read the email we send out below and visit our very unique website and if you think this is something of value, can you help us get the word out anyway you can? We are not advertising this event and are depending on a grass roots email effort to get it done. Please help if you can

    Have a Successful Day,

  • Wanted you to know that through your newsletter, I heard about Pangea Day on May 10th. I shared the information with some friends here in Bitola, Macedonia where I am serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer and now a number of organizations have come together and are planning an outdoor public event. Bitola is the home of The International Cinematographers Film Festival, Manaki Brothers.

Wanted to say thanks and it’s a small world!
