When Robert Putnam wrote about “social capital” in his acclaimed book, Bowling Alone, he preached the importance of being connected to people in your hometown. Creative communities, in particular, benefit from a high degree of social capital. They are places where innovation is nurtured. They thrive on diversity of people and thought. They are not isolated, stagnant places, but vibrant environments where people are encouraged to join together and fulfill their creative pursuits. That’s why CreativeTampaBay – always focused on strengthening our creative climate – hosted a series of conversations on building social capital last summer following a USF sponsored visit by Dr. Putnam to Tampa.

Through a process called The World Café, we engaged groups of diverse people in four different locations throughout the bay area in defining the aspects of community life that constitute relational living. USF produced a report that summarized the findings of these gatherings and under the leadership of Judi Jetson continues to pursue research into this important aspect of the creative community ( link here for report).
