By Michael Van Sickler, St. Petersburg Times, May 1, 2008

Much is riding on whether the gleaming condo towers built downtown in the past couple of years will turn a profit and spur more development and a bigger urban residential market. So speculation about who's moving in is a popular sport among Tampa business and political insiders. But even after Wednesday, when the Tampa Downtown Partnership released its findings from a study that was supposed to shed light on downtown's new denizens, it's still unclear who these people are. Miami Art Machine
By Brett Sokol, New York Magazine, April 27, 2008

If the glory, freneticism, excess, and sunny evanescence of the current contemporary-art boom has a symbolic home, it’s Miami Beach. Thanks to the appearance of an exponentially more fabulous Art Basel Miami Beach fair each December since 2002, the once-tattered resort town has gained a new sense of itself as an aesthetic destination that goes beyond the mere appreciation of a set of well-wrought silicone implants. Now members of the local Establishment, enamored with their smart new friends—collectors, artists, and curators from around the world—want to see if they can get them to stick around. It’s partly about wishing to be taken seriously as a cultural alternative to New York and Los Angeles. But it’s also a bet that fertilizing the creative class is good economic-development policy—especially in a city hit hard by the real-estate meltdown. Which is why a local developer and collector, Craig Robins, is starting a free postgraduate art program in Miami. Read more>>

Take Ruth Pittard, who retired from Davidson College and offered to intern at nonprofit groups in return for room and board. Her applications to 15 organizations detailed advanced skills in volunteer management, career counseling, data systems, training and a willingness to stuff envelopes, if necessary. Only Giraffe Heroes Project, a nonprofit group on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound, Wash., responded. Read more>>

NFL Emerging Business Program Seeks Applicants

The NFL Emerging Business Program is designed to provide local minority- and woman-owned businesses the maximum opportunity to participate in the Super Bowl procurement process. While participation in the program does not guarantee receipt of Super Bowl XLIII-related contracts, it is the intention of the Tampa Bay Super Bowl Host Committee (SBHC) that interested minority- and woman-owned businesses receive information on the Super Bowl procurement process and an introduction to potential purchasing entities. Businesses participating in the Emerging Business Program are included in the Host Committee’s online Business Resource Guide, which will be made available to NFL contractors, affiliates, corporate sponsors and event planners. Global Vision: Local View
By Michelle Malott

This global event will change the world, our world, your world. Several months ago I was watching the live kick-off for the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference in California. TED consists of the best minds in the world, called TEDsters, gathering together to share ideas, collaborate and effectively change the world for the better. Every year, three individuals are selected to challenge the TEDsters to change the world through very specific projects. In 2007, a project called Pangea Day was selected. The challenge was to create a global experience of short films created by individuals and groups around the world. TEDsters were challenged to use their resources to spread the word, encourage, support, and supply equipment for the creation of short films reflecting personal perspectives, cultural experiences and global issues. The impact has been a tidal wave of some of the most thought provoking short films of our time. Over 1,000 short films were created, 24 were selected for a total 4 hours of film.

The global impact continues. May 10, 2008 between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., we in Tampa Bay will have the world changing opportunity to watch the live broadcast of these films with people all over the world. We will be watching these films with all peoples from India, China, Australia, Brazil, Africa, Germany, Canada and the list goes on. We will share in this vision with like minded thinkers and doers around the world collectively opening our minds, expanding our perspectives and inspiring us to be the positive change we want to see, making our world, our community, and ourselves better.

I am inspired by Tampa Bay opportunities, community, and creative thinkers and doers. I am inspired by our vision to connect with global thinkers and expand our perspectives. I am inspired even more when we share an idea and it comes into fruition. This is the rich value I find in Tampa Bay. This is why I call it home. This is why I am not a young and restless, but a young positive catalyst for change, here and now.

The Innovation Hangar at Channelside in Tampa is hosting the all-afternoon event May 10th, providing the space and place for gathering together OUR best minds in Tampa Bay. Check out the “events” section of this newsletter for the details. To find out more about this world wide event visit http://www.pangeaday.org/ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxhRukX-vAw
