In 2002, St. Petersburg artist Maria Emilia was visiting Sicily on a group trip organized by former Tampa mayor Dick Greco when she had a revelation. Looking out over the hills of rural Agrigento, a province where many of Tampa's turn-of-the-century Italian immigrants originated, she was struck by the sight of young men herding sheep as if frozen in time. When Kathleen Casey-Kirschling applied for Social Security benefits earlier this month, the whole world was watching. As the first U.S. baby boomer to rise to the occasion — Casey-Kirschling turns 62 on Jan. 1 — she'll get a check from Social Security in February and, some analysts worry, usher in a long fiscal crisis not only for Social Security but for the economy at large.
But where some see imminent catastrophe, author and entrepreneur Mary Furlong sees dollar signs. Boomers aren't going to take retirement sitting down, says Furlong, who has written several books, including Turning Silver to Gold: How to Profit in the New Boomer Marketplace. While retirement may translate into some boomers leaving their current jobs, it won't spell the end of an active life. Read the full story >>


The Tampa Bay Technology Forum recently introduced the Emerging Companies Academy to help budding entrepreneurs have a greater chance of success. Operating outside the framework of the traditional educational systems for developing entrepreneurs, the Emerging Companies Academy provides real time experience. According the Brent Britton, attorney with Squire Saunders & Dempsey, LLC, and one of the founders of the Academy, “There shouldn’t be any companies failing because they can’t figure out how to succeed.”

Living Legend Nikki Giovanni Speaks Her Mind Through Poetry And Reflection November 15, 7:00 PM
Noted Poet, Writer, Commentator, Activist, and University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech Visits Eckerd. Named one of Oprah Winfrey's "25 Living Legends" in 2006, American poet, writer, commentator, and activist Nikki Giovanni will give a public talk in Fox Hall at Eckerd College on Thursday, November 15 at 7:00 PM. Haitian Roots-Reggae Musician Belo Pre-event at the International Bazaar November 16, 7 PM Pre-concert event, & 8 PM performance at TBPAC
The performance is on Friday, Nov. 16 at 8 PM. See Belo’s pre-concert event with Haitian food, music and dance starts at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $12.50.There are between 30-40,000 Haitians in Tampa Bay. This will be the first time a Haitian performs at a mainstream venue. It means a lot to the Haitian community for your support. Belo’s concert is part of the ARTE festival.
