For the Week Beginning Monday, September 10th, 2007

Save the date for an event based on a recent study called “Portland’s Green Dividend.” Economist Joe Cortright authored a white paper for CEO’s for Cities that speaks to the economic benefits that will accrue from better land use, more mixed use development, reduced commuter time and better transit. Too often we focus on the economic costs of investing in things like rail, or promoting mixed use — he will use the Green Dividend concept to calculate the economic benefits. Having completed two previous studies for CreativeTampaBay, Joe knows Tampa Bay and will tailor his remarks to our unique circumstances. The event will be a luncheon on Tues., Oct. 23 in downtown Tampa at the Hyatt Regency at One City Centre. The Tampa Downtown Partnership and CreativeTampaBay are the presenting organizations. More information will follow on this event.

A White Paper from CEOs for Cities by Joe Cortright (jcortright@impresaconsulting.com) June 28, 2007
Portland, Oregon has acquired a reputation as the nation’s greenest city. For many, this green streak is viewed as a sort of environmental hair-shirt. Portlanders deprive themselves of prosperity in the name of saving the environment. Skeptics view biking, transit, density and urban growth boundaries as a kind of virtuous self-denial, well meaning, but silly and uneconomic. Critics see the seeds of economic ruin. They claim planning, policies and regulations that restrict use or access to resources impede growth and lower household income.
Both the skeptics and the critics are wrong. Being green means Portlanders save a bundle on cars and gas, and local residents have more money to spend on other things they value, which in turn stimulates the local economy. Download the study PDF >>

Please join OneBay to participate in a county-wide Reality Check Tampa Bay exercise. Using engaging materials including Legos®, ribbons, and county maps, participants will make decisions about where and how each county should grow in relationship to the region. Participants will have the opportunity to review the guiding principles set by the regional Reality Check participants and comment and vote on these principles. The tabletop exercise, designed by the Urban Land Institute, educates participants about the interrelationship among regional land use, transportation systems, and natural resources. Input received from each of the seven county workshops will be used to create alternative growth scenarios for the Tampa Bay region.

The Tampa Downtown Partnership announced today that it will participate in a national program called National Park(ing) Day to help draw attention to the importance of green space in urban areas.
National Park(ing) Day is a chance for downtowns across the country to gain temporary green space. The Tampa Downtown Partnership has secured a metered parking space located on Twiggs Street between Franklin Street and Florida Avenue directly in front of Sumo’s Thai Restaurant for the day. On September 21, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., grass sod will be placed within the boundaries of the on-street parking space to simulate a mini-park. Trees, shrubby, and park benches will be included. According to Karen Kress, the Partnership’s director of transportation & planning “the goal is to give a little bit more park space in the downtown area for a few hours and show how it can benefit everyone in the community.” Kress said that dogs and a chess table with players will at the location as well to show how a park can be used in a community for various activities. “Parks bring a diverse collection of people together in so many ways. The entire downtown community is invited and encouraged to come and use the space,” concluded Kress.

I recently heard the question, “Do we really need another group joining the downtown design conversation?” The Urban Charrette makes the case for having the right voices at the table. Young, talented urban planners and architects add a dimension of expertise and creativity to the conversation that is worth hearing, and currently missing.
The Urban Charrette held the first of three forums last Saturday — called Tampa Small — and participants envisioned the region’s walkability and livability through good design. Measuring by months, the Urban Charrette is a young organization. Co-Directors and meeting organizers, Adam Fritz and Taryn Sabia, both architects and twenty something’s, have taken a serious look at how planning and design can impact the region. The turnout of about 50 people and the content were diverse, emphasizing that the conversation about design should not be limited to a select few, but inclusive of community.
