Hillsborough County will hold a series of public meetings as well as a meeting for local non-profit organizations to ask residents and service groups how they think money should be spent on affordable housing, public service, homeless, and community redevelopment projects. The County will use this information to create a 5-year Consolidated Plan Document that will guide how it spends approximately $10 million it receives annually from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. At the meetings, county staff will be asking the public’s opinion on these issues, and answering any questions that attendees have. Meetings will be held in various locations throughout the county from March 27 – April 24. For a meeting date, time, and location near you, Contact Marci Irwin at 813-274-6678.

The trip started out on a fairly auspicious note when I boarded the plane. As I’m settling in, I notice Iceland’s most famous pop star, Bjork, nestle into the seat across from me with her daughter. When I mentioned this to the Iceland Tourist Board rep at a cocktail party later on that day, she said that she knew Bjork and that her sister and the star were classmates. Small world, you think – but then you realize that the entire country of Iceland has only 300,000 people, 2/3 of whom reside in Reykjavik and its su burbs. The City of St. Petersburg has more folks. Iceland is right up there as one of the most adventurous destinations in the world. The home of geysers, active volcanoes, and bubbling geothermally heated pools, its otherworldliness attracted NASA astronauts in the 1960’s for moonwalk training. In fact, NASA is still sending researchers to study the dynamics of water and rock formations to better interpret whether water might still exist in ice form on Mars. Adventure travelers can get their kicks snowmobiling on glaciers, rock climbing, skiing, or playing golf at midnight during the Arctic Open, played on the world’s northernmost golf course in June when the sun is out 22 hours a day.

Several hundred people turned up at the Tampa Downtown Partnership’s 10th annual downtown development forum last Friday at the Convention Center to discuss important issues such as attainable housing, transportation, retail, and amenities in the urban core. Former Pittsburgh Mayor Thomas J. Murphy, the keynote speaker, urged city leaders to exercise a great deal of political will and perseverance to realize their vision. Murphy oversaw the transformation of Pittsburgh’s downtown over the past 12 years, leveraging strong public/private partnerships to encourage more than $4.5 billion of economic development there.
The Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County (EDC) is bringing Jobs Revolution: Changing How America Works co-author Steve Gunderson to speak in Sarasota on April 28 at 11:30 AM at Michael’s on East. Gunderson, who is also a former U.S. Congressman from Wisconsin, will share compelling challenges and opportunities facing America’s workforce in the emerging global economy. Copies of the author’s book will be available for purchase at the event, courtesy of Sarasota News & Books. For more information, contact 941-309-1200, ext. 203 or

Pier Giorgio di Cicco, celebrated Poet Laureate of the City of Toronto, will be in Tampa to speak on the topic of arts and culture’s role in defining the soul of a city. CreativeTampaBay is collaborating with the Tampa Bay Business Committee for the Arts and the Tampa Downtown Partnership to host this very special event, which is graciously underwritten by the law firm of Schumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLC.
Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital city, is the new darling on the international new music and art scenes as well as a hot destination for adventure and eco-tourists. I had the privilege of visiting this incredibly surreal and gorgeous place earlier this month, and found much going on in this small but very creative city.
Hat Trick Productions invites all area artists to pay what you can for this one evening of Durang one-acts. All performances are at the Silver Meteor Gallery, 2213 E. 6th Ave. in Tampa.
Tampa artist Jeff Whipple will transform the façade and the courtyard of the Tampa Museum of Art with two of works. Long Time No See is an exterior video and sound installation projected on to the museum’s north wall. Illuminations of Ruminations is a 300foot illuminated hand-painted mural to be viewed in the museum courtyard. The installation will continue on Fridays and Saturdays 7-11:00 PM through Apr. 15.
No Man’s Land is the title of this new exhibit featuring the works of Lynne Cohen, winner of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Governor General’s Award for Visual Arts. The Tampa Gallery of Photographic Arts is located at 1628 W. Snow Circle in Old Hyde Park Village. Admission is free.
In conjunction with The Toronto Blue Jays, the City of Dunedin and CreativeTampaBay, the Dunedin Fine Art Center invites you to an evening with Giorgio Di Cicco, the celebrated Poet Laureate of the City of Toronto. Di Cicco has extended the role of Poet Laureate beyond the area of arts advocacy in Toronto and into the realm of “civic aesthetic,” a term coined to define the building of a city by citizenship, civic ethics and urban psychology. Giorgio’s reading will be followed by a conversation with guests. Admission is free. The Dunedin Fine Art Center is located at 1143 Michigan Blvd.
The Tampa Museum of Art presents this tribute to the artist’s Pop Shop, a retail space in New York’s SOHO district that closed its doors in 2005. Keith Haring opened the Pop Shop in 1986 and sold inexpensive clothing and gift items that featured his unique designs. The museum will transform its Bank of America Gallery to recreate the Pop Shop environment for visitors to enjoy as well as gain a sense of what the shop was all about. Critics viewed the Pop Shop as crassly commercial, yet the artist’s vision always was more about art than commerce. Today, perceptions have changed and Haring’s work serves as an important model for a new generation of entrepreneurial art producers. The exhibition will showcase more than 100 objects, some never exhibited before, including works on paper, ephemera and discontinued Pop Shop products that spanned the artist’s career.
The Chamber Orchestra of Florida takes advantage of Sunday being a day off for some of the region’s best professional symphony players. The Dr. Kiran C. Patel Center for Global Solutions at USF, the USF University Lecture Series, and Earth Charter Communities USA invite you to a lecture by Nobel Laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai. Dr. Maathai will be speaking on “Grassroots Environmental Activism,” the topic that won her the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. Almost 30 years ago, Dr. Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, a grassroots organization that has helped women plant more than 20 million trees on farms, at schools, and at churches in Kenya. Other African countries have since adopted this initiative and it has served as a model for other countries around the word. Admission is free. The conversation takes place in the USF Special Events Center in Tampa.
Check out this WMNF-produced triple bill of women-led acoustic string bands taking place at Skippers’ Smokehouse. One of the most exciting recent developments in music is young bands rediscovering and celebrating traditional and old-time music, making it fresh and new. Uncle Earl, an all girl string band hammers out traditional southern Appalachian string band music. The Biscuit Burners with their heartfelt vocals and beautiful harmonies bring in elements of hard-driving bluegrass.
